Rhopoint IQ-S 20/60/85
The Rhopoint IQ-S 20/60/85 is an advanced surface quality meter that goes beyond simple gloss measurement to characterize the full appearance quality of a surface. The IQ-S measures specular gloss at 20°, 60°, and 85°, plus haze, distinctness of image (DOI), reflected image quality (RSPEC), and peak reflectance — providing a complete surface appearance profile in a single measurement. The IQ-S is particularly valuable in the automotive industry, where surface appearance quality (not just gloss level) determines perceived paint quality. It is also used for high-quality coatings, plastics, and any application where surface texture and orange peel affect perceived quality.

Measurement Principle of the Rhopoint IQ-S
The IQ-S uses a novel optical system that captures both specular and near-specular reflection data at 20°, 60°, and 85°. By analyzing the angular distribution of reflected light around the specular peak, the instrument separates true specular reflection (gloss) from scattered light (haze) and evaluates image sharpness (DOI). This multi-parameter approach provides a much more complete picture of surface quality than gloss alone.
Applications of the Rhopoint IQ-S
Automotive Paint
Surface quality assessment of clearcoat finishes including orange peel, haze, and image clarity.
Premium Coatings
High-end paint and lacquer quality control where perceived finish quality matters.
Plastics
Surface quality of molded plastic parts for consumer electronics and automotive interiors.
Q: What is DOI (Distinctness of Image)?
A: DOI measures how clearly a surface reflects an image. A perfect mirror has DOI = 100. Surface texture and orange peel reduce DOI, making reflected images appear hazy or distorted.
Q: What is haze?
A: Haze is the milky or cloudy appearance caused by light scattering from microscopic surface texture. Even a surface with good gloss can have visible haze that reduces perceived quality.
